If a mother and her son were both trapped in prison and the son were to make plans for his own escape without thinking about his mother, we would consider his attitude to be very callous and selfish. Since all living beings are our mothers, and all of them are trapped in the prison of samsara, it would be cruel of us to turn our back on them and think of attaining only our own happiness. We must abandon the inferior attitude of concern for our own welfare alone and make a firm decision to enter the Mahayana path for the sake of others.
